The Most Disturbing Devil Contract in Chainsaw Man! Chainsaw Man Chapter 212 Review!

This might be one of Chainsaw Man’s most out of pocket ideas yet could very well have been a Horsemen of the Apocalypse if we follow less biblical interpretations.

In the previous Chainsaw Man chapter, Death reveals that Yoru is the final boss.

Or is she?

Chainsaw Man Chapter 212 is titled, “A Good Girl”

This chapter has 15 pages.

The chapter continues where we left off as Denji still lingers on the sight of Death’s panties, rather than the hole on her belly as she was supposed to show.

Miri explains that they have three strategies but it seems that Denji’s gaze has lingered too much on Death’s panties that even we, the audience, have skipped those three strategies and have no idea what to do.

Which is quite brilliant on Fujimoto’s part and incredibly stupid for an experienced Devil Hunter like Denji.

By their first year, Naruto and Luffy paid attention to planning even if they still acted recklessly.

Denji full-on shuts down at the sight of a woman’s underwear.

Maybe this is character regression, as we will discuss further.

Miri tells Denji to rest up in the nurse’s office and they will call him when the time comes.

The idiot reflects on everything as while obviously he will see war if he does anything about Yoru and Asa, he has no idea how to actually go about it because he shut down during the second half of the exposition that is not of the underwear variety.

Recalling Yoru’s kiss and Death’s panties, he asks if it is okay to jerk off in the nurse’s office.

And this gets a response from an unexpected source.

Beneath the bed is Fumiko Mifune, who even offers to help him with the jerking off.

However, Fumiko tells him to keep quiet and not alert anyone, given what is about to say.

Death is just using Denji for her own plans and that she is not actually a failure but a master manipulator far worse than Yoru.

Fumiko asks Denji to think about it: what would happen if he defeats the War Devil?

That would mean that the Death Devil takes charge as the dominant supernatural power and thus trigger widespread death to all humanity.

Regardless of what Death says, whether it is about her true desires or the “greater good”, Death “only loves death”, meaning what Death said in Chapter 198: “It’s Fami” is true: she cannot control herself.

Death cannot end herself yet she cannot help but cause death.

Denji follows simple logic of course: since Death saved her and carried him over to this school, then she is a good girl.

However, Fumiko says that the Death Devil killed many of her Public Safety colleagues and even herself multiple times.

Denji is confused by how a mortal woman could be killed multiple times and live again.

And here comes the reveal: Fumiko made a contract with the STD Devil at the age of 14, where everyone who has sex with Fumiko Mifune becomes her.

As a result, Fumiko has gone all around the world and made so many clones, all of them sharing information.

This is the answer to the mystery of Chapter 189: “Heart Pass, Octopus”, where we somehow have another Fumiko Mifune looking at the original, treating the dead one as both herself and a completely different person.

Thanks to all the chaos going on, which we barely see outside the news and the Chainsaw Man Church chaos within Japan, the number of Fumiko’s has drastically be reduced.

This Fumiko could very well be a different person from the one that is usually in Public Safety or hanging around Denji.

Do they have a form of telepathy that allows a form of replacement to happen when one of the Fumikos dies?

Fumiko expresses how humanity has already been marching towards its decline without the intervention of the War or Death Devils.

This is a reminder that the Horsemen do not cause evil or tragedy but are the consequence and wake-up call to their emergence.

Humanity is the source of sin and the Devils simply feed on it.

Fumiko suggests that if the War Devil or, more specifically, Denji, were to consume the Death Devil, then humanity will never die.

Fumiko thinks that eternal war is a small price to pay since humans are always in conflict anyway.

She also asks why Denji has yet to be made into a weapon and that it is obviously because Yoru actually loves him.

If Death is gone, Denji can have a happy life with Yoru and Asa.

Now we see the reason for Fumiko’s visit, or more like manipulation: to let Denji tell Yoru to spare Fumiko in the new world.

To entice him further, Fumiko gives Denji a photo of her being naked, which apparently is based on a fanart.

The chapter ends with Denji lingering on the photo of Fumiko in the nude, remarking that she, arguably the most hated character in Chainsaw Man, is actually a good girl.

The STD Devil: The Most Messed Up Immortality Hack

In an already bizarre world like Chainsaw Man, the STD Devil sounds like one of the most disgusting concepts to exist and Fujimoto maximizes that effect brilliantly.

As the embodiment of the fear of sexually-transmitted diseases like AIDS (Acquired immunodeficiency syndrome) and syphilis, the STD Devil’s powers go beyond the level of pestilence, as they damage the body’s ability to fight diseases or reproduce.

With the STD Devil’s powers, a person’s whole biology is essentially rewritten and can serve as a transmitter to other victims.

This is shown in the Contract between this Devil and Fumiko, where every person who has contact with Fumiko suffers from an STD, which in this case is their DNA and essence being completely rewritten as that of Fumiko Mifune.

In other words, every man or woman who has had any form of sexual contact with Fumiko becomes her, losing their will and identity.

This is such a terrifying disease as not only do their bodies experience debilitating changes but they are essentially erased from existence and replaced by Fumiko Mifune, whose own being is entangled after being killed so often.

You could see the connection with the Volume 19 back cover as it shows Fumiko glaring at plants.

Plants pollinate and pollination could be an apt way to describe what Fumiko does with other people, leaving pollen inside the bodies of different people.

The first Horseman is Conquest, which in Chainsaw Man is Control (Makima) but outside the Bible or biblical scholarship, others have interpreted the first Horseman to be Pestilence and here we have a devil that embodies the worst possible pestilence: a lifelong, debilitating condition carried through bodily fluids and sexual contact.

One could argue this is a form of conquest, rendering humans helpless and unable to control their fates and instead be under the control of a different type of biological programming.

There are examples of “body replacement” forms of immortality in other anime, such as D4C from Steel Ball Run’s main antagonist, US President Funny Valentine switching between alternate versions of himself who essentially receive the memories of the original and implying that the original has long been dead.

Interestingly, Pochita ate the AIDS devil and thus AIDS is erased yet there is still a general STD devil around.

Either the AIDS Devil is a different being or it is the same one and is used by Fujimoto to show that the effects of a Devil Contract cannot be erased even with the Devil’s erasure, which would be unusual since all aspects of a Devil’s fear, including the reality that fear is based on, should be erased.

The Ear and Mouth Devils were erased while they were in Chainsaw Man’s stomach, which led to the loss of ears and mouths respectively, until they were forcibly regurgitated.

Fumiko’s clone immortality was first shown during the Aging Devil Arc, first with her lack of concern over losing her organs and then the sight of another Fumiko looking over a dead one.

By this time, Pochita already spat out multiple Devils, maybe including the AIDS Devil but this was never specified.

Further in Chapter 210: “Peace”, it was confirmed that humans reinvented nuclear weapons, meaning the Nuclear Weapons Devil was still erased and that humans simply recreated the concept on their own, without a process of reversing the erasure.

If the AIDS Devil and STD Devil are the same, it is possible that some other form of STD was concocted by some freak accident of nature even after AIDS Devil was gone but more than likely, they are two different Devils.

However you slice it, Fumiko Mifune’s existence shows how warped humanity is.

While the STD Devil provided Fumiko the means to self-perpetuate and self-propagate, she chose to go around the world, turning every sexual partner into herself.

If she clung too long to Denji, maybe our new protagonist would have been Fumiko Mifune.

Que horror!

Is Denji Still Trapped in His Gooning Era?

As we discussed in the previous chapter, Chainsaw Man (both the story and the protagonist) is trapped in a gooning phase, one that has taken a long time to process.

Considering the losses Denji incurred, people were expecting things to change for the character.

Now we have a ticking time bomb.

Denji will make a choice: between saving the world from his girlfriend and cooperating with another great evil.

War and Death have opposing goals but they are clearly not to be trusted in any way.

However, both Horsemen have sentiments and weaknesses.

Yoru loves Denji no matter how she denies it and no matter how empowered she feels.

Death loves humanity in spite of being a prisoner of fate.

The next chapters will determine the fate of humanity: who will Denji stand with?

Chainsaw Man Chapter 213 will be released on September 3, 2025.
