One Piece: All Types Of Haki Explained
One Piece is one of the most famous manga with over 1000+ chapters and anime with 1000 episodes. It introduces us to many characters, many with very different Devil fruits.
Very quickly in the series we are introduced to Shanks who we later get to know is freaking op. Have you ever wondered how Shanks became so op without any devil fruit? This is because of today’s topic of discussion, Haki.
But why did Echiro Oda add Haki when devil fruits already exist as a power system in the series? There were many devil fruit users with intangible abilities like fire, electricity, light, etc.
To tackle such issues Haki is an amazing power system. As we further go into the series we see so much of Haki that it becomes the main power system of the series.
So let’s dive into Haki and learn about it!
What Is Haki?
Unlike many power systems in the other shows where energy flow throughout the body, Haki is a physical manifestation of one’s willpower/spirit force present in all beings.
Types Of Haki
Haki is divided into three main categories, Kenbunshoku no Haki (color of observation Haki), Busoshoku no Haki (color of Armament Haki), and Haoshoku no Haki (color of Conqueror’s Haki).
Color of Observation Haki (Kenbunshoku no Haki)
Observation Haki allows one to observe things around them carefully. It allows one to visualize the presence of those outside their line of sight.
Ussop used observation of Haki to locate sugar through long distances by sensing her spirit.
Fugitora (who is blind) senses the crowd of people moving towards Straw Hats at the end of the Dressrosa arc.
Many characters including Rayleigh also use observation Haki to count the number of living being in a certain range. Those with stronger spirit energy will stand out more, helping users estimate the opponent’s strength.
Using observation Haki enables users to predict their opponent’s movement, this also helps avoid projectiles by predicting the trajectory.
There is an advanced form of this observation Haki Called Future Sight. It enables its users to form a visual image of a future event near them.
Though it is unclear how it works, the future may change as nothing is set in stone until it happens. We see Katakuri and Luffy use this in their battle.
Some users like Otohime and Luffy are also able to sense the emotion of others. We also see Fujitora use this ability to sense the emotion of people in Dressrosa.
Color of Armament Haki (Busoushoku No Haki)
Armament Haki allows the user to coat their body in their own spirit energy. This makes their attacks hit harder while protecting skin from stronger attacks. It enables users to block all sorts of attacks even blocking sharp blades which would otherwise easily cut the hands of the opponents.
This form of Haki also enables its users to land hits on the intangible devil fruits users. Rayleigh uses this form of Haki to attack Admiral Kizaru who has the power of light and is not affected by physical attacks.
Armament Haki can also be used to coat Haki on users’ weapons like blades and bullets. This allows the weapon to damage the intangible devil fruit users. It also reduces the damage taken by the blade thus increasing a blade’s life.
Coating a blade for long enough will permanently turn it black, such blades are called Kokuto (black blade). This makes the blade powerful but it does hold Haki properties if not imbued with them.
Currently known as Kokuto are Yoru and Shusui.
An advanced form of Armament Haki is Full body Armament. This is achieved by coating one’s complete body in Armamement Haki. It is difficult to achieve but is also not better as using it in unnecessary areas is superfluous.
Full-body users have a reputation for getting easily defeated upon using full-bodied. Users of Full body Armament are Vergo, Pica, and Bullet.
In Luffy’s gear fourth we see him apply full-body Haki but avoid applying Haki in superfluous areas. Another form of Haki that Luffy uses in his fourth gear though it does not have an official name, the community refers to it as Tribal Haki.
We see swirl-like patterns in his fourth gear, these are formed when one mixes their Armament haki with their devil fruit powers. It is often depicted with a unique color like Luffy’s has red color whereas Katakuri’s is blue.
In Wano Haki is called Ryou and the way they use it is very different. Normally when using Haki for attacks like any other attack it attacks the exterior of the enemy. Unlike this, Ryou allows one’s Haki to go beyond the armor and attack the enemy in an ethereal form.
This allows one to deliver a piercing shockwave from an attack allowing it to hit an enemy without even touching them.
This form of Haki is used by Luffy, Raykleigh, Sentomaru, Sandersonia, Hyogoro, and the three Admirals. At high enough level weapons, the enemies both using this Haki won’t even touch each other.
Even an advanced form of this is Internal Destruction. This sends the flowing Haki into the target and destroys it from the inside.
It allows the destruction of internal items in ways that would otherwise be impossible. This allows Luffy to bypass the hard skin of Kaido.
Only Luffy and Roger are shown to use this form of Haki.
Color of Conqueror’s Haki (Haoshoku no Haki)
This Haki can only be obtained by only a few selected individuals, about one in several million people. This ability awakens in those whose willpower surpasses almost all other living beings.
It allows its user to project their willpower onto others in a form of a shockwave. This can be used to intimidate an enemy. Those with weaker willpower will be frozen or faint.
Conqueror’s Haki from strong-willed individuals can also cause physical damage to nearby areas. I can be further controlled to target specific enemies avoiding it causing harm to allies.
Known Users of Conqueror’s Haki are, Shanks, Luffy, Rayleigh, Boa Hancock, Whitebeard, Ace, Doflamingo, Zoro, Oden, Katakuri, Big Mom, Captain Kid, Sengoku.
The advanced form of this ability is not officially named but the community has named it Conqueror’s Coating.
This is an ability to infuse one’s own conqueror will into their body or items similar to armament. It can also be stacked upon armament for more damage.
This advanced form can is only used by Roger, Luffy Kaido, Whitebeard, Big mom, Whitebread, and implicitly by Zoro and Oden.
