Jujutsu Kaisen: Anti-Domain Techniques Explained

Chapter 269 showed us the full extent of Simple Domain’s sinister history but what do we know about the other Anti-Domain tactics? Find out here.

If One Piece had Haki to counter Logia and other Devil Fruits, Jujutsu Kaisen has Anti-Domain Techniques, which are still from the same tree of jujutsu abilities.

As the name suggests, Anti-Domains are an application of a person’s Domain to counter an enemy’s Domain.

Anti-domain tactics come in multiple forms, each with their use cases and restrictions.

Simple Domain

We covered Simple Domain extensively due to its relevance to the overall plot of Jujutsu Kaisen and accessibility but this technique is essentially the foundation of any understanding of what anti-domain techniques are and how distinct they are.

While there are varied Simple Domain techniques, their common traits are: the creation of a domain within a limited area of effect and the cancellation of guaranteed-hit effects. However, Simple Domain can just reduce damage for open barrier domains like that of Sukuna and Kenjaku.

The concept of a simple domain can also be used to create a cursed technique without thinking too much about it, such as Rokujushi Miyo’s sumo ring, as the main idea behind the Simple Domain is the creation of a smaller domain in the real world to shield against other Domains.

Hollow Wicker Basket

Unlike Simple Domain, this variant is easier to explain as there is only one type used.

The user has to stay still and make a hand sign with both hands to create a shell of cursed energy wrapped around their bodies that is designed to shut off the guaranteed-hit effect, much like Simple Domain does.

Along with limited mobility, this esoteric technique has many limitations, primarily that it does not work against incomplete or non-lethal domains, since the Basket does not affect the cursed technique itself but the guaranteed hit.

It is likely because of this simple structure and movement restriction that Hollow Wicker Basket fell out of favor over the centuries and the swordsmanship-oriented Simple Domain of the New Shadow School took over, with weaponless variants evolving from it.

Falling Blossom Emotion

Falling Blossom Emotion may look similar to Simple Domain but the difference lies in how the technique is created.

Much like Hollow Wicker Basket, the user coats themselves in cursed energy and it is that cursed energy, not their Domain, that reacts to any Domain attacks upon contact.

What makes it a step above Hollow Wicker Basket is that the

Both Simple Domain and Falling Blossom Emotion can be applied in swordsmanship.

Falling Blossom Emotion does respond to any approaching target but it seems to have a smaller radius, covering only the user’s body and is ineffective against physical attacks or opponents like Maki Zenin, who have no cursed energy to respond against, which Simple Domain does not seem to have a problem with.

Because it is exclusively used by the Three Great Sorcerer Families, Falling Blossom Emotion could be considered the opposite of Simple Domain, although it is not a Domain as it does not create a barrier around the user.

Although most uses of the technique were not perfect or successful, as with Naobito and Ogi’s case, Gojo managed to use this after his Domain collapsed, making it a countermeasure when Simple Domain.

In a way, this works like Killua’s Whirlwind technique from Hunter x Hunter, which responds to any attack based on stimuli, except Falling Blossom Emotion or Simple Domain do not enhance the nervous system the user.

Domain Amplification

This is basically a mobile Simple Domain with the drawback of being unable to use any cursed techniques.

Domain Amplification is a Simple Domain but rather than producing a barrier around a small area, Domain Amplication produces a person’s Domain around the user’s body, except this Domain is merely an empty coating.

The purpose of this defensive tactic is to let the Domain coating suck up the enemy’s cursed technique in order to cancel it.

As an offensive Anti-Domain tactic, Domain Amplification can also be used to attack opponents directly.

In a way, Domain Amplification counters the guaranteed-hit effect with its own guaranteed hit effect, whether it is in absorbing the cursed energy attacks into itself or in dealing damage to the enemy.

The biggest advantage Domain Amplication has is that, unlike Simple Domain, it does not need any binding vows to strengthen the effect.

However, because the user has to constantly pour in their Domain onto their bodies to suck in the attack, Domain Amplication prevents users from using their cursed techniques.

Instead of using Domain Amplification to fight, Sukuna would either invoke Hollow Wicker Basket in his Heian form so his other arms can use Dismantle or switch between his cursed technique and Domain Amplification with precise cursed energy control.

Sukuna also circumvents the limits of Domain Amplification somewhat as he is able to use Domain Amplification within his Malevolent Shrine.
