Is Yoru Redeemed Here? Chainsaw Man Chapter 229 Review!

Amidst one of the deepest character studies in a single chapter, Fujimoto once again reminds us that he is the writer as Yoru seemingly accepts Denji’s request for sex.

CHAINSAW MAN © 2018 Tatsuki Fujimoto, Shueisha

In the previous Chainsaw Man chapter, Yoru is defeated but admits she has finally empathized with Asa’s guilt.

Chainsaw Man Chapter 229 is titled, “Nightjar and Asa”.

This chapter has 15 pages.

The chapter title come from the nightjar, a type of nocturnal bird that eats insects.

Nightjars are also called nighthawks.

The names Yoru and Asa are meant as opposites, night and day.

Yet Asa is the “day hawk” because the surname Mitaka contains the character for “hawk/falcon”.

As the War Devil possessing the body of Mitaka, Yoru is the “War hawk”, which ties into her first form.

Actually, the ties between “night” and “hawk” go even further because in One Piece, the World’s Greatest Swordsman is named Dracule Mihawk, the wielder of the sword Yoru.

Was Fujimoto adding some One Piece elements here?

Because Mihawk and Mitaka are quite similar in word form.

The chapter begins with Yoru laughing at Asa’s confusion and her own state.

Asa asks why Yoru did not choose to erase her and make her mind and body Yoru’s own.

This leads into one of the most surprisingly deep parts of Chainsaw Man: Yoru’s first vessel.

After being defeated by Pochita at an unknown point, the weakened War Devil entered a bird, a nightjar but even though it was a simple creature, it felt guilt over eating worms just to live.

Yoru called out the bird for being stupid and arrogant to feel so much over what is as natural as breathing.

But Yoru uses guilt as a means to build stronger weapons, weapons designed to kill and always came with guilt, and so she studied that facet of humanity.

In the end, Yoru could not quite comprehend what Asa has to feel guilt for.

What are considered moral wrongs or sins are nothing to a Devil but “natural acts”.

This explains everything: the way Yoru treats her children as mere extensions yet feeling genuine care for them or her Devil allies, and at the same time why she unknowingly absorbed Asa’s biases, such as the Moral Eel Devil and eventually her guilt over accidentally killing birds.

Devils feed off fear and causing fear, eating humans and destruction, all of these are the same as the bird catching an innocent worm.

Devils are creatures too. All sins are instincts and humans are the worms.

Hearing this, Denji tears open his remaining arm to feed Yoru some blood.

Bewildered by Denji’s choice, Yoru recovers and demands to know why he fed her his blood despite the risk of getting killed by her.

Denji explains that he suddenly remembered her promise of having sex with him if he ate a dangerous Devil.

In response, Yoru bursts into hysterical laughter as the world around them continues to descend into further chaos.

Chainsaw Man Chapter 230 will be released on February 25, 2026.
