Sanji WINS Against the Fraud Killingham! One Piece Chapter 1197 Full Spoilers!

With Sanji’s unique “Reflective” Conqueror’s Haki and New Flames, has he not only surpassed Zoro but even a similar Conqueror’s Haki Tank, Rocks D. Xebec, as well?

ABD x ONE PIECE © 1997 by Eiichiro Oda/SHUEISHA Inc.

In the previous One Piece chapter, accepting Ivankov’s words after two years, Sanji overcomes his self-denial and self-sacrificing tendencies, declaring that Killingham will not land a blow on him anymore.

Thanks to Will of Marco for the translations like usual.

One Piece Chapter 1197 is titled, “Love is Defense”

This chapter has 17 pages.

This is in reference to Ivankov’s words in Sanji’s flashback from the previous chapter.

Cover Page Request: “Zoro laughing out loud at Sanji, who has been turned into a child by Bonney’s ability.”

We can see Bonney eating meat at a table while Zoro hands out candy to kid Sanji, laughing out loud. Kid Sanji is clearly annoyed and is trying to kick Zoro, LOL.

Translator’s Note: On Zoro’s shirt, there’s a quote written in Old Irish:

Rop tú mo chathscíath, rop tú mo chlaideb.

This translates into English as:

“Be thou my battle-shield, be thou my sword.”

These lines come from the fifth stanza of Rop tú mo baile, the Old Irish Christian poem traditionally associated with the beloved hymn Be Thou My Vision.

The poem is traditionally dated to the 8th century, although some scholars suggest it may have been composed later.

Editor’s note: “VS. St. Killingham!!! Sanji, confronting his own “self,” is…?!”

So the chapter begins with Sanji fending off Killingham’s attacks, asserting that his legs are tougher than anything, using his kicks to see how much progress he can make to scratching Longinus and Killingham’s body.

So far, he has been able to push back against Killingham, making him go through multiple giant houses and humiliating the God Knight.

Sanji reflects on how he viewed his body so far, admitting that deep down that he might wanted to end himself out of hatred for the Germa, seeing him as tainted as they are.
He was always afraid of ending up like them, a contradiction to everything he believed and loved.
However, in his self-acceptance, he understands that the Germa no longer own his body.
His body exists because of the sacrifices of his mother, to keep him human.
And when he left the Germa, this body was honed by Zeff’s training and philosophy of loving the art of cooking and respecting women.
He even recognizes Ivankov as an important part of his journey, no longer afraid of him but instead seeing him as a valuable mentor on his journey, teaching him that love is defense.
This important lesson was something Sanji needed to acknowledge in order to move forward in this world.
Similar to how Zeff taught Sanji that his hands are precious and must be protected as they are exclusively used for cooking,
Yet he could not fully accept this lesson when it came to fighting, as even if he exclusively used his legs for fighting, he continues allowing him to be injured over and over again, seeing every wound as redemption for his Catholic guilt over being alive.
Well, now he locks in, rewires his philosophy into defending his body in order to properly protect those he loves.

As a result of locking in, the spiral of Sanji’s eyebrow changes to the left side (just like what happened when he fought Queen).

However, this acceptance of Germa DNA and power is not from choosing the hated power but to accept that everything he has gone through, including being born a Germa, are a part of who he has always been and that his whole body, in spite being Germa, was formed from the love of his birth mother Sora, the resolve of his true father Zeff, the training of his master Ivankov and every fight he has experienced.

Here, Sanji remembers every opponent he faced: Bon Clay, Jabra, Absalom, Wadatsumi, his father Judge and Queen.

Each of them represented a form of progression in his journey to self-love.

Bon Clay sets up Sanji’s time with Ivankov and the okama, learning how similar they actually are and eventually, how to love himself.

Fighting Jabra gave Sanji his Diable Jambe, the ability to turn his legs into fire with sheer passion and rotation, which overcame Jabra’s Tekkai, the shielding ability of the World Government’s agents.

Absalom was an uncomfortable reflection of how Sanji’s chivalry could be distorted into perversion

Wadatsumi enabled Sanji to achieve his mastery of Sky Walk, giving him air superiority and

Judge was the past haunting him but also showing Sanji how far he came without Germa technology, ending not with a traditional W but with Sanji saving his family, his humanity being the reason for Judge and the siblings’ being saved from Big Mom.

Finally, Queen represented everything Sanji resented across his opponents: perversion, cruelty and inhumanity by becoming a cyborg and with Sanji’s improved Ifrit Jambe, he found that he did not need Germa strength or to lose his humanity for Luffy’s sake.

Yet Sanji missed one crucial lesson from each fight: as he made progress in his victories, Sanji neglected how much he continued stressing his body out and right now, the fight against Killingham serves as reinforcement of this forgotten lesson.

Which brings us back to Killingham, who is shocked to find that his regeneration has slowed down, meaning Sanji was slowly figuring out Conqueror’s Haki but like Sommers with Zoro, he refuses to admit it.
Sanji comes back to further punish Killingham, hitting him over and over with Collier.

Seeing his opponent suffer, Sanji decides that the only way he can beat him is to make him suffer, to make him wish he was dead and this terrified Killingham, who never in his privileged divine life has met anyone with the drive to humiliate and punish him this far.

After firing another Longinus lightning blast, Killingham covers himself in INSANE ARMOR, his Omen Armor.
Omen has the power to strengthen those under Imu’s Covenants and can revive the Weapons of the Creators and now, Killingham covers his whole body in what is essentially Anti-Haki.

However, power given will always be brittle compared to power earned

And that’s what happened as even though Sanji could not break the Omen armor yet, blocking Longinus with his leg was enough to shatter the spearhead

Lying down, Sanji sees his leg flame change, being whiter and purer, with sparkles that make his flames look like diamonds.

Most importantly, his body no longer feels pain.

Sanji has now mastered the concept of “love is defense”, where his focus and passion has shifted towards hardening his body.

What’s interesting is that his leg has now developed a passive ability to reflect damage, meaning he has awakened Advanced Armament Haki, specifically Emission, meaning any attacks that hit his legs could reflect back against the opponent.

This gives him a baseline for what his Conqueror’s Haki will be.

A Shield type Conqueror’s Haki similar to Rocks D. Xebec, whose entire body was coated in a thick mass of Conqueror’s Haki that could deflect attacks, in Chapter 1165: “Reverberations”.

And since Garp and Roger could only beat him by adding a critical mass of Conqueror’s Haki, this means the God Knights are cooked.

Which is exactly what happened to Killingham after this, Sanji kicks Killingham in the face, this time breaking his resin bubble and part of the Omen Armor with Conqueror’s Haki, all seen from the black lightning he emits, breaking the flimsy walls of invincibility Killingham has been raised with for years.

Also, Sanji actually figured out Conqueror’s Haki faster than Zoro did, as while Zoro needed chapters worth of practice to stab Sommers’ heart, Sanji unlocked Emission Haki and then immediately figured out the mechanism behind his style of Conqueror’s Haki.

Which means Sanji has already surpassed Zoro.

Even if Zoro coats his swords in Conqueror’s Haki, Sanji’s Shield Haki has a lot more potential and uses in future battles, being able to bring the hurt back to his opponents without really needing to do anything.

And this is the beginning of Sanji making himself Luffy’s Shield as Oda finally confirms that the Sword and Shield theory is real

The Elbaph Arc showed Sun God Nika with a sword and shield, weapons Luffy clearly does not use but now we understand what that means: Luffy’s closest crewmates, the Monster Trio, with Zoro, the future World’s Greatest Swordsman as his Sword and Sanji as his Shield.

Sanji’s transformation into Luffy’s shield actually has basis, as in his introduction in the Baratie arc, he fought Invincible Pearl, one of Dog Krieg’s commanders who literally wears round shields all over his body
And check it out, there are eight shields on his body, like the eight dots on Nika’s shield, which seems to be the symbol of the Ancient Kingdom.

Also remember how he fought Jabra in Enies Lobby.

Notice how Sanji learned Sky Walk from Cp-9 but not Tekkai

Maybe that’s because Armament Haki is easier to move around with but you can tell Sanji wasn’t big on defense and simply focused on winning fights at all cost, as we see during his training with Ivankov.

Well now, he has leveled up even faster, stitching together all his experience to Ivankov’s lesson of love is defense.

And this type of Shield Haki is gonna be crucial if Luffy has to survive the fight against Imu because right now, bro has no counter to Imu’s arsenal of weapons or Omen flames.

With Sanji’s Shield Haki, however, its possible for him to deflect Imu’s attacks and it would be fitting if the fight against Imu involved all the Monster Trio working together, just as the Harley mural shows Imu the Devil fighting against an alliance of other races.

After all, we do see an animal swordsman and a giant with a shield, which could represent Zoro and Sanji respectively and although it is clear they are directly fighting Imu’s allies under his shadow and riding on a ship, it is also possible they are also gonna face off against the Great One once their business with the God Knights is settled.
