In the previous Kagurabachi chapter, the Mikaboshi demand for the Soga Princess Chiaki, which, among other causes, motivates Kunishige to join the Seitei War effort.

Kagurabachi Chapter 123 is titled, “Chiaki”

This chapter has 19 pages.

March 21st – 3:00 A.M

The chapter begins with the gathering of the “Enchanted Blade” Project Advisory Committee Gathering, who look through Subaru Urita’s suggestion on the Enchanted Blade, to construct sorcery veins into a katana, which would mean the sword acts as a battery of Spirit Energy for the user to control..

But they notice a major obstacle early in development.

Datenseki is an iron ore and to make a katana, you first need to heighten its purity values and forge it into steel.

Yet the Datenseki also reacts strongly to heat.

If placed in any kind of heating furnace above the 1,000 degree threshold, its energy levels will intensify causing an uncontrollable explosion.

The Committee is still in disbelief about Kunishige, who is a no-name unlike Urita.

Hasumi vouches for Kunishige’s intuition since he was able to discern all the details in their fully classified top secret operations with but a mere look at the Datenseki.

This shows his special eye for things.

One of the members is skeptical since someone from the Sorcery Bureau brought him to their premises without prior indication and thus could have been briefed on their operations by the third-party.

The others still argue further on Kunishige having a zero track record.

These fellows should watch One Piece.

A 40-year-old man started his journey with no bounty but climbed the ranks so quickly.

Hausmi recommends they give him permission to conduct the experiment but Izaru tells Hasumi t cool his head and that if they let someone handle the Datenseki without a care in the world, it could lead to major disaster.

Not to mention how little of the Datenseki Japan actually owns.

Izaru brings up Mashiro’s death, having seen his remains himself, for being a cause for Hasumi’s plea.

We also finally learn about the birth of Hiyuki Kagari, with her mother having received burn marks.

But because of their physical constitution, members of the Kagari Family, are naturally, completely immune to all forms of fire.

So this child, who is given the name Hiyuki, will be the next “Tamer” of the “Flame Bone”, a weapon brought up in the latest chapter as a possible countermeasure against the Mikaboshi.

And she would be the first person in a hundred years with this potential.

There would be a trial of succession and they can begin as early as 3 months old and with adjustments to schedule considered, “Flame Bone” will be ready within a year.

Hiyuki at this point was already born and what we saw from her mother was past footage since Hiyuki was born on January 8th, meaning she is a year older than Chihiro at 19 years old in Part 1 and Chihiro was born on August 11 next year.

The committee would rather have a 3-monthg old toddler risk burning the whole country down than listen to the word of a supposed upstart.

To be fair to them, both options are bad but “Flame Bone” has actual history from their limited perspective.

The Same Day – 7:00 A.M – Sorcery Bureau

Within the Sorcery Bureau meeting, Izaru meets up with the other leaders but he too is skeptical about waiting a whole year with the risk of letting the whole country burn.

So the Sorcery Bureau chooses to buy time.

We cut to the Soga household, where Chiaki puts on a dress, recalling the death of the previous Princess and how she collapsed when she inherited the Prophecy ability, the first time a lower branch member was given the power.

Chiaki remembers this as the last time she would feel Kunishige’s touch and we see a cute page of Kunishige carrying an unconscious Chiaki on his back.

Chiaki was close friends with three troublesome boys: Kunishige Rokuhira, Togo Shiba and Soshiro Azami.

They used to play and goof around together but Chiaki’s mother has kept them away because Chiaki would now be the cornerstone of Japan as the new Soga Princess, the symbol of order and hope.

But to Chiaki, fate was a prison that kept her from being with the man she loved, Kunishige.

However, Shiba would sneak into the house and give her Kunishige’s letters, with Chiaki enjoying the fact his handwriting is still so bad.

One of the maids actually caught these exchanges and brought up the accusation.

In spite of her importance, Chiaki would still suffer from the politics of her clan and elders, so she had to save face, with Chiaki’s mother trying to cover up as Kunishige’s fault but that this cannot repeat.

Chiaki’s mother continues to insist that Japan’s order is only kept because of a veiled agreement between the Soga and the Sorcerers of Japan, who would run amok otherwise.

Chiaki also brings up how the Soga will tolerate certain activites as long as they remain behind the scenes, so as not to harm the local nature of administration.

If one of the clans decided to go against the unspoken agreement, going beyond the scope of what certain activities the state allows, the Princess would get a vision that is to be seen as a “deformity” aggravating the nation.

Wherever the Soga Princess points, the Spear of Order follows soon after.

This system is exactly what Yura bemoaned in Chapter 104: “Heroes”, because the system would turn a blind eye on the human trafficking operations of the Sazanami Clan for their Rakuzaichi and other offenses to maintain peace among Sorcerers and to make sure they could be kept in line.

The Spear of Order from the Soga Clan and the freedom to abuse the weak in secret.

Chiaki remembers the former Princess’ words about not acting in individuality, for that would cause distrust and the collapse of order.

While she was right in a way, this standard did not apply at all to the other, more abusive clans and instead imprisoned the innocent like Chiaki in a cage of obligation.

Chiaki received a vision of Kunishige’s home being destroyed by the Soga, a consequence of continuing this affair and so she had to witness her attendants burning all the letters.

In this way, at least Kunishige would stay safe.

We return to March 20, to the present, where Chiaki wakes up from her vision of the disgusting Mikaboshi King’s ultimatum.

Chiaki felt remorse, wishing she gave a sterner warning about the situation but her mother assures her that she did her best.

Chiaki blurts out how the enemy demands her.

So she decides to surrender to the Mikaboshi to avoid further casualties but Chiaki’s mom protests.

Chiaki expresses how she has forgotten the feeling of Kunishige’s warmth long ago, feeling as if she does not deserve his love.

March 24th

The “Enchanted Blade” Project proposed by Hasumi Shinsaku was rejected.

By the leading division of the Sorcery Bureau, the Mikaboshi’s demands were accepted on certain few conditions:

They agreed to surrender Princess Chiaki Soga.

Hasumi remarks that the Mikaboshi have agreed to a one-year ceasefire, a convenient time for when Chiaki would bear the Mikaboshi heir.

Ichiki states that at least Chiaki is from a branch family and while it has not been made public, a new legitimate lineage daughter was born in the lineage approximately six months ago.

Ichiki: Even if Mrs. Chiaki was to have a child in the near future, it is said that the next “prophetic ability” will be bestowed upon her, as she is the legitemate heir.

Even if Chiaki bears a child of the Mikaboshi King, the power of “Prophecy” will return to the main bloodline.

Hasumi protests this and Ichiki agrees, having been against the idea.

Hasumi wonders how Ichiki could be sure that her child will not possess “Prophecy” as there have been no records for it being passed it in the branch family either.

Yet Ichiki brings up how there have never been official records of this at all because in the Soga Clan, it is vital that everyone believes in the supremacy of the primary bloodline.

Meaning the Soga Clan were waiting for something like to happen, to dispose of an undesirable bearer of the Soga Clan’s treasure.

The Sorcery Bureau (three male members being highlighted) want to curry favor with the powerful Soga but ultimately, Ichiki points out that this was all Chiaki’s choice.

The higher-ups from both groups have clearly taken advantage of how vulnerable Chiaki has been due to the losses in the Irishima Incident.

They have one more year and they can use Flame Bone but currently, they are at their weakest, without the foresight of Prophecy and the loss of the Soga Clan’s strongest military might in the form of Yoshinojo and Hiroto, the latter being the bearer of Kurotsuchi.

The chapter ends with Kunishige reading Chiaki’s last letter, of wanting to see him again.

Can Kunishige save the woman he loves?

Editor’s Note: “What he must now do is..?”
