REST IN HELL, BAREM BRIDGE! Chainsaw Man Chapter 214 Review!

The most hated antagonist of Chainsaw Man has officially ceased to exist in one gulp. However, now Chainsaw Man must deal with Hell itself.

CHAINSAW MAN © 2018 Tatsuki Fujimoto, Shueisha

In the previous Chainsaw Man chapter, Yoshida bids farewell to Denji, grateful for the memories as he sacrifices himself to end his life.

Chainsaw Man Chapter 214 is titled, “Bff, Creak, Door”

This chapter has 13 pages.

As it turns out, there was no bomb.

What was seen was a straight line of flames burning through the school.

Denji sees Yoshida moving, struggling as debris impales his body but then someone emerges from one of the destroyed windows.

The cause of this tragedy was none other than Denji’s designated torturer, Barem Bridge.

The Flamethrower Hybrid is just carrying his flamethrower, smirking as he cuts through the school and prepares to torch Yoshida, saying that both men have drawn the short end.

It is likely that Barem was fully prepared to be killed here, knowing how Denji would respond.

So, Yoshida was actually a literal switch, a light switch, not a bomb switch.

He was meant to die to fuel Denji’s transformation into Black Chainsaw Man.

But it is more likely that he was meant to be used by Public Safety as a sacrifice for the Contract with the Hell Devil, hence the “switch” line.

Barem was assigned to kill him but this is where things get muddy.

Barem Bridge is one of the heads of the Chainsaw Man Church, which was organized by Fami to make Denji into a weapon and is itself as a countermeasure against the Death Devil, along with opposing Public Safety in the past.

Barem was also the man who triggered Denji’s previous transformation where he surrendered his body to Pochita, meaning he is essentially fixing his mess here (or is he?).

However, this organization was precisely against the Death Devil that we are seeing both the Fake Chainsaw Man or Fire Devil, the source of the cult’s powers, and now Barem, its other mastermind, working with Public Safety against the Death Devil.

This confirms that, essentially, the Chainsaw Man Church is no longer with Fami and with the death of the Fire Devil and Barem, the organization is defunct, except maybe for the other Hybrids who have not aligned themselves with Fami, such as Miri Sugo, who might as well be as gullible as Denji was when he was rescued by the Death Devil.

Suddenly, the intestine scarf emerges out of Denji to lift Barem up as Denji transforms into Black Chainsaw Man and Barem is immediately brought to Pochita’s mouth.

The wicked man screams for his life as pain coils through his body from the sawblades inside Chainsaw Man, grinding his flesh painfully.

Barem’s last words were for Pochita to kill him first before eating him.

This is because Barem would not be erased if he was eaten as a corpse but now he is panicking because Pochita intends to fully erase his existence.

No more flamethrowers and no more Barem Bridge.

A fitting end for the man who killed Denji’s new family, especially the way he torched Denji’s apartment, pets and served Denji’s adopted sister Nayuta on a silver sushi platter.

Now we see Denji stand with the two girls, Death and Famine, in the midst of rain

Famine feels relieved that they did not get eaten by Pochita.

Yes, had Pochita decided to think rationally and eat Death here and now, Yoru would win yes but Death would be fully erased.

However, that would likely not bring back all of the dead, only cease it for the present.

Either way, it feels like the silent, violent Pochita was clearly intent on sparing Death and Famine because both will be needed to fight against the new threat.

A door opens and the chapter ends with the doors of Hell replacing the sky view.

It seems Public Safety has used its ultimate trump card: a new Contract with the Hell Devil.

Was Yoshida the only one to pay this price or were both him and Barem meant to pay it?

Either way, this is clearly an act by Public Safety due to its Contract with the Hell Devil and upon seeing Chainsaw Man being allied with the Death Devil, Public Safety has clearly chosen the side of Yoru, the War Devil.

Perhaps this is how we will see why he is called the “Hero of Hell”, as the world will witness Chainsaw Man fight against the Hell Devil, who has control over Hell itself.

Question is, in this apocalypse of Death vs War, what is Hell’s role here, if Hell is the overseer of the domain where Devils, where Fears, are born?
