SBS Volume 112 came from the upcoming Volume 112, set for July 4, 2025.

Roger Pirates Roles

In SBS Volume 96 released in April 3, 2020, Oda was able to provide a general introduction for all the Roger Pirates.

After 16 volumes and 5 years, we finally have the roles of each member.

Captain: Gol D. Roger

First Mate: Silvers Rayleigh

Navigator: Scopper Gaban

Tactical Officer: Moon Isaac Jr.

Doctor: Crocus

Helmsman: Donquino

Torturer (Interrogator): Millet Pine

Scholar: Rowing

Informant – Erio

Intelligence Officer – Spencer

Gunner – Petermoo

Musician – Jacksonbanner

Shipwright – Blumarine

Notably, there is no inclusion of a cook like for the One Piece crew but the main roles of doctor, navigator, shipwright and helmsman are filled, with a scholar added in the form of Rowing.

We do not know if Rowing has any connection to actual scholars such as the Scholars of Ohara or explorers like Louis Arnott but such a role would be crucial for the study of the Poneglyphs, even when Kozuki Oden was the only person in the crew capable of not just reading but also writing the script.

New Giant Warrior Pirates Profiles

A reader asked Oda if they have seen Gerd and Goldberg as children, to which Oda first began outlining a profile for the New Giant Warrior Pirates, then a sketch of them as kids.

Of note, we have already seen the roles of the New Giant Warrior Pirates during the “The Stories of the Self-Proclaimed Straw Hat Grand Fleet” Cover Story, from Chapter 896: “The Last Request” to Chapter 901: “Even If You Die, Don’t Die!!!”

For this volume, we now have complete profiles for the members of the New Giant Warrior Pirates.

Gaban Inspiration

A reader hypothesized that Scopper Gaban was based on the tokusatsu show, Space Sheriff Gavan, that aired from 1982-1983.

However, Oda had a different inspiration in mind as he based Gaban on the French actor, Jean Gabin since Oda always liked old movies.

Taking inspiration from a French actor could be yet another Sanji parallel since Sanji’s nationality, if put in the real world, would be French.

Second Rocks Zombie

A reader asked if the man with sunglasses among the Rocks Pirates was Gill Bastar.

Oda confirmed this, saying that Gill Bastar is actually the protagonist of his first manga that he wrote when he was 17 years old, “Wanted”.

This character was seen as “hidden” by Oda and it does make sense as along with Captain John, he would be added to the roster of Rocks D. Xebec’s unruly crew of Yonko-level members.

Gill Bastar’s wanted poster in the one-shot chapter cover of WANTED! shows a bounty of 87,340,000,000 Z, which might be the highest bounty ever conceived if we assume, like the Berry, one Z equals one Japanese yen.

The message at the bottom translates to:

“Hurry up and kill this guy”

It is interesting coincidence that two of the zombies acquired by Moria were originally characters from Oda’s previous works, as Ryuma, the national hero of Wano who possessed Brook’s shadow, was originally from Oda’s one-shot Monsters.

Two of them were also part of the Rocks Pirates, including John Silver.

There is also another Rocks Pirate who resembles another Zombie General (#) but Oda has yet to point this out.

Dosundada

The Dosundada were first mentioned by Gaban in Chapter 1139: “Mountain Eater”, where he talked about love and mixing among different races, which resulted in many hybrids.

A reader asked if the Dosundada are a hybrid between a Giant and Tontatta Dwarf or maybe between ancient giants and dwarves.

Oda responded, saying that the reader was close.

Rather, the Dosundada are a hybrid between a human and a Tontatta.

This is because the word “Tontatta” is an onomatopoeia referring to the cute footsteps they make.

Dosun, which also could mean “hammer”, is a higher volume version of Tontatta.

This means Charlotte Linlin’s 82nd of her 85 children, Normanda, yet in spite of having a human mother, she is the same size and features as a regular Tontatta.

Additionally, Oda says that a cross between a Giant and a Tontatta is called a “Zushindodo”, which is very rare.

Elbaph Inspiration

Question:

I really love the atmosphere of the villages of Elbaph! Is there a country or town it was modeled after?

Answer:

I’m really glad to hear that — the design of Elbaph took quite a long time. Thank you very much!

As for the model, of course, I based it primarily on buildings from the Viking era in Northern Europe (Scandinavia). From there, I imagined the culture and geography.

It’s actually the same village that was in Volume 86, but I drew it from an angle that wouldn’t reveal it was on top of a giant tree.

Strong World Monsters and Elbaph

A reader noticed that the animals from the One Piece movie, Strong World, have been integrated into the Elbaph Arc.

Oda reiterates that he was responsible for designing most of the animals in the movie and he intentionally included them on Elbaph since he said,

“Well, coming up with something new is troublesome.  I mean, those animals were created based on the theme of “What would animals look like if they evolved in a world where strength governs everything,” so it actually made things quite easy… No, no! I also had the idea that animals raised in a warrior nation would be similar, so I made them appear here! It’s definitely not because I’m too bothered to think of something new, okay?!”

Loki’s Den Den Mushi

A reader asks if Loki’s Transponder Snail has a different “speech recognition ability” from the other Snails.

According to Oda, this particular Snail is better able to understand human language and can thus connect calls on its own and Oda compared this snail to the Siri app.

Could this indicate the arrival of some of Vegapunk’s technology or yet another instance of Elbaph already having access to advanced technology without outside world contact?

The World “Cup”

Question:
Tsubasamaru: Hello, Odacchi-san! Because Ripley and Gerd are giants, are their cup sizes “W” as in “World Cup”?

Answer:
Oooh! That’s a good one! Lol! That’s so stupid! So stupid yet it’s the best!!! Let’s go with that!

You see, I’ve received a lot of questions about that. Well, if I’m going to calculate it, the busts of the female giants are more than 6m. “What cup size are they?” they asked — hell if I know!

Up until now… Tsubasamaru-kun (pen name of the question sender), let’s go with that! The breasts of every female giant are all W (World) cups!!!

Legendary Crew?

Question:

The pirate crew that appears in Ch. 1122 — is that the “legendary pirate crew,” right!?

Answer:

Yes, that’s right! Where did they come from and why? Lol. How should I explain this? Lol.

For those who are interested about this, please search it on the internet! So, in a certain Jump project more than 25 years ago, these characters were based on my “Hip the Skull Curry,” alongside Nobuhiro Watsuki-sensei’s (Rurouni Kenshin author) “Scimitar,” and Takei Hiroyuki-san’s (Shaman King author) “Hiro Gomon,” who formed a pirate crew.

Encouraging a Fan

Question:

Hello, Oda-sensei!! I am a boy who’s about to enter middle school. I have a question for you, Sensei. I am hooked on One Piece right now.

I love Kizaru. My dad owns up to Volume 82 of the manga and I have been reading them. I want him to buy Volumes 83 onwards, but do you have a good strategy suggestion for that? Please teach me!

Answer:

Oh come on, this makes me want to buy it for you!!! To all the young boys who read through over 100 volumes of the manga without losing interest, I wish I could buy it for every one of you!!!

But since that’s not realistic, you should go with the “shoulder massage strategy”! There’s no parent that wouldn’t be happy from getting a massage from their child! Volume 82 is exactly where Momonosuke vows to avenge his father!

Once your dad’s shoulder — and heart — has softened, you should say:

“Father, I want to defeat Kaido!!!”

That should do the trick!!!

More joke trivia

vegapunk one piece

Question:

Vegapunk’s cousin, Vega Pants, is in Pantsu (Underwear) Hazard, but what kind of island is it and what type of person is he?

Answer:

You knew about that island, huh? Vega Pants is the son of Vegapunk’s father’s little brother. Consequently, they live on Pantsu Hazard, which is located to the south of the Kingdom of Baltimore. (It’s an island where the residents have a culture of wearing women’s underwear over their heads.)

He has an earnest and bright personality, but the island itself is set apart from the rest of the world. That brings back some memories…

one-piece-imu

Question:

Imu’s first-person pronoun is “Mu”, so Odacchi’s first-person pronoun should be “Da”, right?!

(Note: The reader is taking the last syllable of one’s name as the first-person pronoun. Imu is “Mu” and Oda is “Da”.

I dunno if it’s related, but “Mu” and “Da” combined is “Muda”, meaning “futile”, “pointless”.)

Answer:

Oh, it seems like it. Lol. So you came up with a rule like that, huh?

Question:

Oda-san, did you ever think that One Piece’s serialization is stretching because of the influence of Luffy’s awakening to its surroundings?

Eiichiro Oda:

Whaaaat? Damn it!! So that’s how it works? Damn it, Luffy!! Unforgivable! “Da” will not forgive you!!

(Oda is using his first-person pronoun “Da,” like “Mu” is to Imu, related to one previous SBS question)

shirahoshi one piece

Question:

Could it be that Shirahoshi’s type is me?!

Eiichiro Oda:

I can’t deny that, but I know what Shirahoshi’s future is!!!

Question:

So in SBS Volume 28, you said the highest record for an “eye pop” is “18 – Whoa, you surprised me!”. So what’s the current highest record for an “eye pop” and how many “Whoa, you surprised me!” is it? Did it break the world record?

Answer:

Let me explain. When I draw manga, I make the same faces as my characters, so someone asked me, “Do your eyes pop too?” To which I said it pops in “18 – Whoa, you surprised me!” And the world record would be “84 – Whoa, you surprised me!” Apparently, that’s the current world record.

Right now, when I drew Nika, I’ve set an unprecedented record of “222 – Whoa, you surprised me!” Thank you very much!

Question:

Odacchi, why is Gunko walking around in her panties?

Answer:

Well, I keep getting comments like it’s “panties” this, “panties” that, but listen — it is technically underwear, but if we call it that, then that would make Gunko some kind of pervert! That’s not the case at all. You know Nami and Bonney’s outfits on Egghead? It’s a fashion where the hems of their jackets are extended. In fact, it reduces the amount of skin that’s being exposed! So that outfit is totally fine! How rude!!!
