Look Back Wins Best Animated Feature in Japan’s Academy Awards
Look Back may not have gotten an Oscar nomination but that is not the case in Japan

On March 14, 2025, it was announced that Look Back, the film adaptation of Tatsuki Fujimoto’s one-shot of the same name, won Best Animated Feature at the 48th Japan Academy Film Prize.
The Japan Academy Film Prize is Japan’s version of the Academy Awards (the Oscars) given annually since 1978 by the Japan Academy Film Prize Association for various categories, including animation.
Last year’s Animation winner was Studio Ghibli’s “The Boy and the Heron”.
Meanwhile, ” Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba – The Movie: Mugen Train” and “Evangelion: 3.0+1.0 Thrice Upon a Time” won the 2021 and 2022 awards respectively.
It is also noted that Look Back was considered for an Oscar nomination but was not able to make it to the list.
Look Back is also the highest-rated film in 2024 on Letterboxd and other platforms, and has also won the 2024 Filmark Annual Awards.
About Look Back
Look Back is the 143-paged manga one-shot written and illustrated by Tatsuki Fujimoto (Chainsaw Man, Fire Punch), released digitally on July 19, 2021 and collected in a single volume by Shueisha on September 3, 2021.
Look Back is later adapted into a feature film released in Japanese theaters on June 28, 2024, produced by Studio Durian and directed by Kiyotaka Oshiyama, who is also in charge of the screenplay and character designs.
The film earned over 12 million USD internationally in the box office.
